His real name was Sultan Abdul Qadir Labbai (1800-1847). He was a man of great devotion and one of the first to translate the Qur'an into Tamil. His songs are simple but profound and reflect the spirit of resignation and Vedantic thought. Mastan Sahib spent the last years of his life in austerities. He had disciples among both Muslims and Hindus. |
