A Chola king who was a builder of temples and is regarded as a Nayanar. According to legend, as a spider in his previous birth, he was devoted to the deity of Tiruvanaikka (Tiruci) and made a canopy out of his web for the god. There happened to be another devotee, an elephant, who pulled down the canopy. In a rage the spider crept into the trunk of the elephant who, unable to bear the consequent pain, dashed his trunk against the jambu tree. Both elephant and spider perished. The spider was reborn the son of the Chola queen Kamalavati and came to be called Koccengannan (Koccenkot), one with red eyes. |
