number; for the Pythagoreans, number is the first principle (Arist. Metaph.986a15); Iamblichus sometimes identifies the gods with arithmoi, regarding the first numbers from the monad to the decad as deities and archetypal models of manifestation; the numerical organization of the cosmos requires to treat the organizing principles of bodies as physical numbers and distinguishes them from mathematical numbers, which are the paradigms of physical numbers, but the ideal, noetic, or eidetic ( eidetikos), numbers transcend even mathematical numbers. |
