The first four leaders of the Islamic community after the death of the Prophet of Islam in 632 C.E.: Abū Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthmān, and ‘Alī. They were all close companions of the Prophet during his lifetime, who succeeded him only in terms of his temporal, administrative functions (e.g., in collecting and distributing tax money, leading the Muslim armies in battle, upholding Islamic law in society, appointing regional governors, etc.), and not in his spiritual function as bringer of the revelation. |
