Long Description: Literally, "what is remembered;" in Hinduism, a category of sacred writings understood to be part of inspired tradition, but not directly revealed, including the Upavedas ("branches of the Vedas"), the Vedāṃgas ("limbs of the Vedas"), the Śāstras (classical "textbooks"), the Purāṇas (mythological tales), and the epics Rāmāyaṇa and Mahābhārata; in contrast to shruti (śruti).
