Long Description: "The pious forbears"; refers to the early Islamic community that existed at the time of the Prophet and the immediate generations that followed him. The salaf are believed to have demonstrated the principal norms for what constitutes properly Islamic behavior. In modern Islamic discourse certain groups are referred to, or speak of themselves as "salafī," i.e., looking to the example of the pious forbears.
