Long Description: The tax levied upon non-Muslims living within the borders of the Islamic state. This tax is mentioned in the Qur’ān (9:29) and was understood as a right of the state in relation to its non-Muslim subjects for the sake of the protection afforded them by the Islamic armies, as well as the economic and legal freedoms guaranteed them as subjects of the Islamic state. Non-Muslims who paid the jizya were known as dhimmīs, literally, "those who are protected."
